This guide explains how to set up, manage, and use Flight Types in Missions within DroneSense. Flight Types help identify flight purposes and can be configured by Organization Admins. Default types are provided, and admins can add, remove, or rename types. Filtering and reporting features will be added in future updates.
This guide walks you through setting up and using Flight Types.
What are Flight Types? Flight Types can be assigned to Flights to help identify the purpose of a flight. Missions can be configured with a specific list of Flight Types for Pilots to select from.
Currently, Flight Types can only be added to Missions. Support for Flights with Calls for Service is coming in a future update.
Note: Filtering, reporting, and exporting to CSV are not currently available but will be added in a future update.
If Flight Types are not set up, all Flights will be labeled Unspecified until Flight Types are configured.
Getting Started
Only Members with the Roles and Permissions to create Missions can select the Flight Types for a Mission.
Your account is already set up with two default Flight Types, Maintenance and Training.
They cannot be deleted, but the name can be changed.
If you want to add additional Flight Types, follow these steps.
- Navigate to Flights & Missions > Missions and select a Mission.
For this example, we are going to use Training Flights. - Click Edit Details.
- Click the Allowed Flight Types for Mission dropdown and select the Flight Types you want allowed for the Mission (2).
- The selected Flight Types will be shown.
- If you want the Flight Type to be automatically set for a Mission, fill in the Flight Type field.
Note: If you don’t set a default Flight Type, the Flight Type will default to Unspecified.
Once the Flight Types are configured, Pilots can select a Flight Type when joining a Mission.
Note: Unspecified is shown if a default Flight Type is not set.
Instructions to Add Flight Types
Note: Only Organization Admins can add additional Flight Types.
Users should plan the Flight Types they want to use before creating them.
Best Practices
Keep Flight Types high-level and consistent
Avoid creating too many similar types
Align Flight Types with reporting needs (once available)
Keep to a length of 21 characters (Technically, you can make it longer than 21 characters, but only the first 21 characters will be displayed in the app.)
- Log in to your DroneSense account and navigate to Admin > Settings > Flight Types.
- Click on Add Flight Type.
- Type in the new Flight Type in the box (1) and click the Save icon (2).

Removing Flight Types
Flight Types can be removed if you no longer need them. Existing Flights will retain their current Flight Type and must be updated manually if needed.
Note: Only Organization Admins can remove Flight Types.
- Log in to your DroneSense account and navigate to Admin > Settings > Flight Types.
- Click on the Delete button next to the Flight Type you want to delete.
- Click on the Confirm button.
Changing the Name of a Flight Type
The name of a Flight Type can be changed, which will automatically update the name everywhere it was assigned.
Note: Only Organization Admins can change the Flight Type name.
- Log in to your DroneSense account and navigate to Admin > Settings > Flight Types.
- Click the Edit icon.
- Type in the new name (1) and click the Save button (2).
